Blogging from WPPI

WPPI 2006 was a big show this year. We introduced our new and improved Aurora Fine Art paper and focused on our extensive line on inkjet greeting cards.

On the inkjet technology front, Canon showed off the Pro9000, Pro9500 and PROGRAF iPF5000. The first two are 13" wide desktop printers that we talked about here.

We got a look at all three printers up close. All are pretty impressive in terms look and size. Prints from these printers were in the booth printed on Canon media and Hahnemuhle Photo Rag (like our custom made Dourian Fine Art paper). Color saturation and detail were impressive. Black & white photos looked crisp and had a pleasing neutral tone. Overall the machines look to be impressive and may indeed offer Epson Pro level printers stiff competition.

The iPF5000 is indeed a beast, coming in at 90.5lbs! Its a 17" wide, pro-level printer, aimed right at the Epson 4800. Here are a few feature bullet points:

* 12 color Lucia (tm) pigmented inks - includes red, green, blue "spiker color" inks

* 4 black inks on-board - matte black, photo black, and two light blacks. No changing carts when you want to go from satin to an art paper.

* Dual print heads with a whopping 30,000 nozzels! A current Canon ip9900 desktop printer only has a little over 6000 nozzels.

* Replaceable print heads

* Roll, paper cassette, and single sheet feed for up to 17" wide media
